The Early Childhood Education diploma is a two-year program offered at multiple RRC Polytech campuses, including Notre Dame, South Winnipeg, Interlake (Selkirk), Portage la Prairie, Peguis-Fisher River, and Winkler. The program begins in August and allows for flexible course-based registration, enabling students to study on a full-time or part-time basis. It includes a practicum component that provides hands-on experience in childcare settings. Graduates may also pursue an optional joint degree with the University of Winnipeg or access various credit transfer opportunities with other institutions.

The program prepares students to deliver quality childcare through a curriculum grounded in child-centred and play-based learning approaches. Areas of study include child development, guidance techniques, communication skills, family and community relationships, and professionalism. Emphasis is placed on an emergent curriculum approach that builds on children’s interests while fostering collaboration with families and communities. The program also incorporates current research in child development from a developmental health perspective.

Throughout the program, students gain practical experience by working with young children in a variety of early learning environments. Upon completion, graduates are equipped to design and implement learning experiences that support the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development of children. Applicants should be aware that certain background checks are required, and those with specific criminal or child abuse registry records may be ineligible to complete the program.
