What you will study
The BA (Hons) Sports Journalism course is designed to prepare students for careers in the industry by equipping them with the knowledge, values, and practical skills needed to succeed as professional sports journalists. It develops agile, independent reporters who can work across multiple platforms while understanding the wider social and democratic role of journalism in telling diverse stories both on and off the pitch. Students gain experience across a range of formats, including audio, visual, written, and social media, enabling them to become adaptable and innovative storytellers.
Developed in collaboration with industry experts and researchers, the course offers a combination of practical and theoretical learning through a variety of modules. Students learn how to cover a wide range of sports, from live reporting and post-match analysis to in-depth interviews and investigative storytelling within an evolving and diverse sports landscape. Teaching is informed by both research and professional practice, with opportunities for placements to gain real-world experience.
The course is delivered by professionals from broadcast, print, and digital journalism, and benefits from strong links with key journalism organisations. Students have opportunities to work on live briefs, contribute to the award-winning Birmingham Eastside website, and collaborate within a shared newsroom environment. Graduates have progressed to roles with organisations such as Sky, the BBC, Reach Plc, and the Express & Star, with some achieving notable industry recognition during their studies.
