Birmingham City University (BCU)
The Master of Research (MRes) in Sustainable Engineering is a flexible and comprehensive programme designed to equip graduates with the skills and expertise required for careers in research, academia, or industry within the sustainable engineering sector.
The course provides advanced postgraduate training in research methods and practice, alongside the development of transferable skills in areas such as urban design, project management, sustainability, technology, and interdisciplinary collaboration. It supports students in building a strong foundation for both academic and professional progression.
Throughout the programme, students engage with advanced research processes, from formulating initial ideas and proposals to applying contemporary research philosophies and methodologies. This approach prepares them for doctoral study, academic publication, or careers within sustainable engineering fields. Students also have the opportunity to specialise in a chosen area, supported by the multidisciplinary expertise of their research supervisors.
The course structure balances independent research with taught components, ensuring a rigorous and research-intensive learning experience. A central element of the programme is a substantial independent research thesis focused on a specific area of sustainable engineering. This thesis is formally examined by an external examiner, ensuring that the programme maintains high academic standards expected of research degrees.
