Overview
The International Foundation Year in Health and Life Sciences provides international students with a structured pathway towards the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Learning Disability) and Social Work degree. The programme develops foundational knowledge in health and life sciences while preparing students for undergraduate study across healthcare and social care. Students explore relevant scientific and health-related concepts and develop essential academic skills including research, academic writing, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving and independent learning. The programme also supports students in adapting to UK higher education and understanding university teaching, learning and assessment methods. Through structured learning and academic support, students can build confidence and prepare for further professional study. Successful completion of the foundation stage and meeting the required progression criteria enables students to progress to the BSc (Hons) Nursing (Learning Disability) and Social Work degree. The undergraduate programme can provide opportunities to explore person-centred care, learning disability support, health promotion, communication, safeguarding and social care. Students can develop an understanding of the diverse needs of people with learning disabilities and the importance of providing inclusive, compassionate and effective support. This pathway is suitable for international students interested in healthcare and social care who want to support individuals and families while developing professional knowledge across nursing and social work and preparing for future careers in health and community services.
