Overview

The International Year Zero in Health and Life Sciences provides international students with a supportive academic pathway towards the BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science degree. The programme combines foundational knowledge in health and life sciences with the academic and transferable skills required for successful undergraduate study in a professional healthcare discipline. Students develop an understanding of relevant scientific and health-related concepts while strengthening their skills in academic writing, research, communication, critical thinking, problem-solving, numeracy and independent learning. The programme also helps students adapt to the UK higher education environment and become familiar with university teaching, learning and assessment methods. Through structured academic support, students can build confidence and prepare for further professional study. Following successful completion of the International Year Zero and meeting the required progression conditions, students can progress to the BSc (Hons) Paramedic Science degree. The undergraduate programme can provide opportunities to explore emergency care, patient assessment, clinical decision-making, communication, teamwork and professional practice. Students can develop an understanding of how paramedics respond to urgent and complex healthcare situations and provide appropriate support to patients in different circumstances. This pathway is suitable for international students interested in emergency medicine, healthcare and patient care who want to build a strong academic foundation before progressing to undergraduate paramedic science studies and future careers in emergency and healthcare services.
