Overview

The MPhil in English Literature provides postgraduate students with the opportunity to undertake original research and contribute new knowledge to their chosen area of study within a vibrant and internationally recognised academic community. The programme welcomes applications across a broad chronological and theoretical range of English literature, with supervision provided by leading scholars actively shaping developments in the field. Students are encouraged to think critically and creatively, engaging fully in the intellectual life of the School while developing their research within a supportive and interdisciplinary environment.

The programme is designed to equip students with advanced critical, theoretical, and research skills, culminating in the production of a substantial doctoral thesis that represents an original contribution to the discipline. It prepares graduates for careers in higher education and other professions requiring high-level analytical and research expertise. The School also provides tailored support for international students, including assistance with academic writing through dedicated services such as the Writing Development Centre.

Students benefit from a dynamic research culture that connects local literary contexts with broader global perspectives. The programme offers a range of professional development opportunities, including research training, thesis workshops, and opportunities to present work in progress. Additional support includes access to dedicated research facilities, opportunities for undergraduate teaching with appropriate training, and funding to attend conferences or undertake archival and library research, helping to enhance both academic and professional development.
