Cardiff University - Cathays Park
The Clinical Psychology doctorate is a three-year professional training programme designed to equip graduates with the competencies required for registration as a Clinical Psychologist with the UK Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). The programme prepares trainees to work with individuals, families, and communities experiencing psychological difficulties across a wide range of settings, including NHS services, community organisations, and the third sector. It emphasises inclusive, evidence-based practice that respects diversity and promotes psychological wellbeing.
Students on the programme are employed as full-time salaried NHS trainees with Cardiff and Vale University Health Board while also undertaking postgraduate study at Cardiff University. Training includes a combination of academic learning, research, and supervised clinical placements across health and social care settings in south, mid, and west Wales. During the first two years, trainees are typically placed within affiliated health boards, with opportunities to specialise in the third year, including potential placements beyond the region. The programme places strong emphasis on multidisciplinary teamwork, leadership development, resilience, and self-care.
Established in 1975, the programme is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and approved by the HCPC. It also holds additional accreditations, including level one accreditation from the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) and foundation level accreditation from the Association of Family Therapy and Systemic Practice (AFT). Successful completion enables graduates to apply for HCPC registration and Chartered Clinical Psychologist status with the BPS
