Overview
Materials and Energy is a key research area within the Chemistry (PhD) programme, focusing on solid state and materials chemistry and its role in addressing major societal challenges. Research in this area contributes to the development of sustainable energy solutions, the mitigation of climate change, and the creation of advanced materials for medical and pharmaceutical applications. The programme is supported by well-established expertise and a strong community of postgraduate researchers working across both fundamental and applied aspects of materials science.
Research activity is organised around three main themes: the development of advanced experimental techniques for investigating material properties, the application of state-of-the-art experimental and computational methods to understand fundamental behaviours, and the design of new materials and processes for innovative applications. This integrated approach enables the exploration of materials at both theoretical and practical levels.
Students gain a broad range of skills, including experience in materials synthesis and characterisation, as well as training in experimental and computational techniques used to study material properties in detail. The programme also emphasises the design and development of materials tailored for specific applications, preparing graduates for careers in research, industry, and technology-driven sectors.
