Overview

The PhD in Critical and Cultural Theory provides postgraduate researchers with the opportunity to undertake advanced, interdisciplinary study under the supervision of academics engaged in leading research within the field. The programme supports work across a wide range of theoretical approaches, including critical race theory, postcolonial theory, feminist and gender studies, queer theory, eco-criticism, and perspectives influenced by structuralism and post-structuralism. It fosters an intellectually diverse environment in which students can explore complex cultural, social, and political issues through critical analysis.

The programme is designed to develop high-level research and analytical skills, preparing students for careers in academia and other sectors requiring advanced critical thinking and subject expertise. It also offers tailored support for international students, including assistance with academic writing through dedicated services such as the School’s Writing Development Centre.

Students benefit from a dynamic and supportive research culture, with access to a wide range of training and professional development opportunities. These include research skills programmes, thesis workshops, and opportunities to present work in progress. Additional features include dedicated research facilities, opportunities for undergraduate teaching with appropriate training, and funding support for attending conferences and conducting archival or library research, contributing to both academic and professional growth.
