Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Biomedical Sciences

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The Biomedical Science degree, accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), provides a practice-led approach to understanding human biology, health, and disease. The course is designed to develop the practical and analytical skills required for careers within the biomedical and healthcare sectors, supported by access to modern life sciences laboratories.

Accreditation by the IBMS enables graduates to pursue a pathway towards becoming a Biomedical Scientist within the NHS. Following completion of the degree, graduates can apply for trainee roles and undertake the IBMS registration training portfolio, which is required for professional qualification and potential registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.

The programme covers a range of key biomedical disciplines, including clinical biochemistry, molecular genetics, cell biology, infection and immunity, and blood science. These areas are central to healthcare delivery, medical research, and the wider biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries.

The degree equips graduates with the scientific knowledge, laboratory skills, and professional understanding needed to pursue careers in biomedical science and related fields.
