Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Media and Communication
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The Media and Communication degree explores key questions about how media is produced, who creates it, how it is consumed, and whose interests it serves. These issues are central to understanding which voices and stories are prioritised or marginalised within society. In an increasingly complex and constantly evolving media landscape, the course equips students with the critical, transferable, and technical skills needed to analyse and engage with media in meaningful ways. It prepares graduates for a wide range of career opportunities within the media industries and beyond, as well as for postgraduate study. Students are encouraged to explore and develop their own research and professional interests, building confidence and a clear direction for future career pathways. The course examines how media industries construct and represent stories, and how this shapes understandings of identity, culture, and society. It also considers how audiences interpret and engage with media content. Alongside critical analysis, students develop practical skills across a range of media forms, including television, radio, photography, and digital platforms. These skills are integrated with research and creative practice, enabling students to produce their own media content while engaging with contemporary issues, emerging technologies, and the broader historical and cultural context of the media industry. To enhance employability, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study. This placement, which students are responsible for securing with support from university staff, provides valuable experience in industrial or research settings, although it is not guaranteed. Students who undertake a placement year can transfer to the relevant course pathway and will pay a reduced fee during this period.
