Overview

The BA (Hons) Game Art degree provides a comprehensive foundation in game art, design, technology, and asset production, before enabling students to develop advanced skills in 3D asset creation and games production. At the end of the first year, students can choose between two specialist pathways: Game Art, focusing on concept design, sculpting, worldbuilding, and asset production pipelines; or Game Technical Art, which develops expertise in motion capture, rigging, tool creation, and shader development. The selected pathway is reflected in the final award.

Throughout the course, students undertake projects that develop both creative and technical abilities, preparing them for a wide range of roles within the games and entertainment industries. Learning is supported by collaboration with industry professionals and opportunities to work on live and simulated projects, helping to build a strong portfolio.

Students have access to advanced digital art studios equipped with high-performance workstations, graphics tablets, 3D facilities, and industry-standard software such as Autodesk Maya and Adobe Creative Cloud, creating a professional studio environment. The course also benefits from partnerships with leading game studios and digital art companies, offering opportunities for mentorship, real-world projects, and insight into current industry practices and technologies.

The programme covers key areas including 3D modelling, animation, rigging, motion capture, procedural modelling, and real-time rendering, alongside game design principles such as mechanics, asset pipelines, and worldbuilding. Students also complete major project work that reflects professional production environments. An optional professional placement year is available after the second year, allowing students to gain valuable industry experience, supported by the University’s employer networks and careers services.
