Overview

The MPhil in Language and Communication offers students the opportunity to undertake in-depth, focused research across a wide range of topics within language, linguistics, and communication. The programme encourages applicants with diverse academic interests and supports them in developing as independent, innovative, and intellectually creative researchers. Delivered over one year full-time, the Mphil is based within the Centre for Language and Communication Research, part of the School of English, Communication and Philosophy, where students are supervised by internationally recognised experts in the field.

The programme is designed to prepare graduates for careers in higher education and roles requiring advanced research skills and specialist knowledge. Students engage in original research that contributes to the understanding of social, applied, and interactional aspects of language and communication, culminating in the submission of a doctoral thesis. The research environment is characterised by a diverse and international student body and a strong emphasis on academic collaboration and intellectual development.

Students benefit from a range of opportunities and resources, including participation in staff research projects, access to teaching experience on undergraduate programmes, and support through professional development initiatives. The programme also features regular research seminars, postgraduate-led events, and an annual research conference, fostering an active academic community. Additional support includes dedicated research facilities and funding to attend conferences, workshops, and research visits relevant to students’ doctoral work.
