What you will study

The BSc (Hons) Game Programming degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the fast-paced and evolving games industry, with a strong focus on developing advanced programming skills for game development.

Students benefit from access to specialist game development facilities, including high-performance PCs and virtual reality development kits, providing a professional environment in which to build practical experience. The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on learning in areas such as artificial intelligence, graphics programming, and mobile and console game development.

Teaching emphasises the use of industry-standard tools, including Unity and Unreal Engine, alongside opportunities to work with custom-built game engines. Students also gain an understanding of the hardware platforms used in modern game development, from mobile devices to high-end gaming consoles.

The programme is informed by links with industry, offering insights into current practices and opportunities to engage with the wider games development community. Students may also take part in events such as game development competitions, helping to build experience and professional profiles.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

Overall, the degree equips graduates with the technical expertise, practical experience, and industry awareness required to pursue careers in game programming and related fields.
