Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Game Technology degree is designed to equip students with the technical and creative skills needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving games industry. The course explores key areas such as game engines, networked gaming, and emerging technologies, while providing hands-on experience in modern laboratories equipped with industry-standard tools and equipment.
Students work collaboratively with peers and academic staff to develop games that combine innovation and technical expertise, while also exploring areas such as cloud gaming and procedural content generation. The programme provides a strong foundation in both programming and interactive media design, alongside opportunities to develop immersive experiences using virtual, augmented, and extended reality technologies.
Throughout the course, students gain practical experience with advanced graphics workstations, network simulation tools, and game testing environments, as well as exposure to software engineering practices including development lifecycles, version control, and testing methodologies. Collaborative projects simulate professional game studio environments, helping students build teamwork and problem-solving skills.
The course also benefits from links with major technology companies and game studios, offering insights into industry practices, access to professional tools, and opportunities for internships, mentorships, and live project work.
The course offers an optional professional placement year, providing students with the opportunity to spend a full year working with an employer after successfully completing their second year of study. This placement enables students to gain valuable industry experience, develop practical skills, and explore potential career paths, with some choosing to return to the same employer after graduation.
Students who wish to undertake a placement year are responsible for securing a suitable role relevant to their area of study, supported by the University’s extensive network of employers and dedicated Careers teams. Once a placement is secured, students can transfer onto the placement version of the course.
