Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Gemmology and Jewellery Studies

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BSc Gemmology and Jewellery Studies degree is internationally recognised and rooted in the heritage of Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, a historic centre of the gemstone trade.

The course goes beyond standard professional training in gemstone identification and grading, offering a broader and more advanced exploration of the field. Students study areas such as mineralogy, laboratory techniques, jewellery valuation, and the ethical and sustainability issues shaping the global jewellery industry.

The programme is designed to support students from a range of academic backgrounds, including those without prior science experience, enabling them to develop the technical knowledge and industry insight required for careers in the sector.

Strong links with industry provide opportunities for students to engage with real-world practice and prepare for a variety of global career paths. Graduates have progressed into roles within auction houses, valuation, international laboratories, education, mining, and the wider gem and diamond markets.

The course also benefits from international partnerships and local industry engagement, contributing to a dynamic and connected learning environment.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, offering valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme equips graduates with specialist knowledge, practical skills, and professional awareness for careers within the global jewellery and gemstone industries.
