Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - English and Creative Writing

The BA (Hons) English and Creative Writing degree combines the study of literature and language with the practical craft of creative writing. The programme enables students to explore how texts are written, interpreted, and adapted across different forms and historical periods, while developing their own original writing.

Students build a strong foundation in English studies, becoming critical and informed readers of texts. Alongside this, they engage in creative writing workshops led by experienced practitioners, developing skills in areas such as narrative structure, character development, setting, and style.

The course also supports the development of research and analytical skills, enabling students to examine texts in depth and communicate ideas clearly, persuasively, and creatively.

Teaching is delivered within a supportive learning environment, encouraging engagement with the role and impact of language and storytelling in contemporary society.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable experience in a relevant professional setting. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme equips graduates with creative, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for a range of careers or further study in writing, publishing, media, and related fields.
