The Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning master’s degree prepares students for in-demand roles such as machine learning engineer, data scientist and AI developer, as well as careers in research. The course develops the skills required to design, build and deploy AI solutions that address global industry challenges across the rapidly evolving fields of artificial intelligence, data science and intelligent systems development.

Students gain experience in programming for AI and data science, machine learning techniques and model evaluation. These skills are applied to real-world datasets using industry-standard software. The course also examines the ethical and societal implications of AI, supporting the development of responsible, robust and fit-for-purpose solutions.

An industry placement or research year provides valuable professional or academic experience. It also gives international students the opportunity to study in the UK for two years rather than one, supported by a two-year international study visa route for the course.

Key benefits of the course include the option to complete a placement or research year, enabling students to develop practical industry experience or advanced research skills. These opportunities can support progression into careers in industry or academia after graduation.

Students have access to specialist facilities, including a Cisco-certified cybersecurity and communications laboratory, a usability laboratory and high-performance computing resources. Industry-standard software and technologies include Python, R, SAS and a range of machine learning libraries.

Core areas of study include machine learning, deep learning, responsible AI, algorithmic bias, cybersecurity and data science. Teaching is delivered by staff with expertise in statistical machine learning, data science, artificial intelligence and applied research. The course places a strong emphasis on building practical AI and machine learning expertise through applications based on real industry scenarios. Students also benefit from links with employers and external partners across sectors including healthcare, finance and energy.

The placement option provides a full year of work experience, helping students enhance their career prospects and deepen their knowledge of a specialist area. Assessment and feedback are provided throughout the year, encouraging reflection on the experience and supporting preparation for future careers.
