Overview

The Performance specialisation, offered within the suite of Music research degrees (PhD), is designed for graduates in music who wish to integrate practical performance with advanced academic study at doctoral level. The programme provides expertise across a range of areas, with particular strengths in keyboard performance, including piano, harpsichord, and organ. It supports practice-led research that combines performance with critical reflection, enabling students to explore new insights in musical performance.

Assessment for the PhD in Music Performance typically involves either a 90-minute performance accompanied by a thesis of around 50,000 words or a scholarly edition with critical commentary, or a portfolio of performances totalling approximately 220 minutes supported by a written commentary of around 20,000 words. Performances may be presented live, as recordings, or as a combination of both, and form part of the permanent academic record. Practice-led submissions are evaluated using the same criteria as other research degrees, with an emphasis on sustained investigation and the generation of new knowledge.

The programme benefits from internationally recognised expertise in historical performance and performance practice, as well as excellent facilities and performance opportunities. Students have access to a collection of period instruments and can participate in regular lectures, masterclasses, and workshops led by distinguished scholars and performers. Additional academic support is provided through postgraduate discussion groups and a range of activities designed to enhance both performance and research skills.
