Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - English Literature
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BA (Hons) English Literature degree offers a comprehensive exploration of literature in English, spanning from early texts and Shakespeare to Romantic poetry, Gothic fiction, Victorian novels, and contemporary writing. The course provides both breadth and depth, combining survey modules that trace the development of literature across different periods with themed modules that explore topics such as environment, gender, sexuality, and race.
Students examine how narratives and poetic forms are created and interpreted, developing the ability to form and communicate informed critical perspectives. The programme draws on a range of interdisciplinary approaches, including history, philosophy, film, sociology, cultural studies, and psychology, to enrich understanding and analysis.
At its core, the course is centred on the study of language, storytelling, and their impact on society. Teaching is delivered by experienced academics within a supportive learning environment, encouraging students to engage with literature in ways that are relevant to contemporary contexts.
An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, offering the opportunity to gain valuable experience in a professional setting. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
The programme equips graduates with critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills, preparing them for a range of careers or further study in literature and related fields.
