Bachelor of Arts - English - Creative Writing

The creative writing program at Murray State University offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in creative writing, as well as a minor in creative writing. Under the guidance of the university’s award-winning faculty, students in the program refine their writing skills in small workshops that provide personalized attention and a supportive peer community.

Students pursuing a major in creative writing have the opportunity to take introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in fiction (including short stories and novel writing), nonfiction, and poetry, as well as specialized courses on topics such as horror writing and nature poetry. Alongside faculty members, creative writing majors benefit from guest authors who visit campus as part of the annual Murray State Reading Series. Students also gain experience in editing by contributing to Notations, the student-run literary journal.

Graduates with a degree in creative writing are well-equipped for a variety of career paths, including screenwriting, editing, publishing, technical writing, video game design, marketing, journalism, teaching, business, law, and professional writing.
