Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Landscape Architecture

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The Landscape Architecture degree focuses on the design and creation of outdoor environments that combine aesthetic, functional, and ecological considerations. The course prepares students to develop inclusive and sustainable spaces such as parks, public squares, green infrastructure, and wider urban and regional landscapes.

Students engage with real-world challenges including air quality, water management, food security, carbon reduction, and energy efficiency. The programme also explores the relationship between outdoor environments and wellbeing, highlighting the role of landscape architecture in supporting healthier and more sustainable communities.

Throughout the course, students develop skills in design and research, working across a range of scales from detailed site-specific projects to broader spatial and ecological strategies. This approach encourages an understanding of how natural systems and the built environment interact.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The degree equips graduates with the creative, technical, and environmental knowledge required for careers in landscape architecture and related fields.
