Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Fashion Design

The BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree provides a comprehensive education in contemporary fashion design, combining creative innovation with technical craftsmanship. The course places a strong emphasis on sustainability, systems thinking, and socio-economic awareness, preparing students to engage with the evolving challenges of the fashion industry.

Students benefit from opportunities to work with industry partners and experienced academic staff, including researchers and practitioners. The programme adopts an inclusive and forward-thinking approach to design education, supporting the development of diverse creative perspectives across both 2D and 3D practices.

In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core fashion design skills, including garment construction, material exploration, fabric and fibre analysis, tailoring, and draping, delivered within a studio-based atelier environment. In the second year, the focus shifts towards systems thinking in fashion design, with opportunities to balance traditional craftsmanship and digital design approaches. In the final year, students develop and present their individual design practice through a range of creative outputs, such as garment collections, fashion products, material research, or digital design work.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme equips graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills required for careers within the fashion industry and related creative sectors.
