Overview

This course is delivered by the School of Engineering in collaboration with the School of Physics and Astronomy and the Institute for Compound Semiconductors (ICS), benefiting from the knowledge and expertise of all these areas. The ICS is a unique facility in the UK, aiming to establish a global hub for compound semiconductor technology research, development, and innovation. It includes renowned companies such as IQE plc, SPTS, and Newport Wafer Fab, with the goal of leveraging Cardiff University's existing expertise to efficiently and promptly introduce academic research into the production environment.

The curriculum of this course is designed to be flexible, incorporating the latest results and innovations while incorporating the most effective teaching and learning techniques. It offers a diverse set of modules, including cutting-edge optional modules for students to choose from.

As part of this course, students will undertake a three-month summer project. This project can be based in the School of Engineering, within the ICS, or as part of a placement with one of the industrial partners. The course boasts strong and long-established industrial links with leading companies, enabling the offering of a portfolio of theoretical, practical, fabrication, and applications-centered projects in both academic and industrial settings.

Upon completion of this course, graduates will possess the necessary training, skills, and hands-on experience to excel in the dynamic and highly competitive field of compound semiconductors.
