Overview

Biomedicine is a specialised research area within the Biosciences postgraduate research programme (MPhil), focusing on the molecular mechanisms that underlie normal physiology, disease processes, and tissue repair and regeneration. The research spans a range of disciplines, including biochemistry, cell biology, molecular genetics, and signal transduction, providing a comprehensive approach to understanding biological systems.

Research is conducted using a variety of experimental models, including human cell lines, tissues, and model organisms such as mice and Xenopus, allowing for both in vitro and in vivo investigation. The programme is supported by strong funding and access to modern facilities, enabling the use of advanced techniques across multiple areas of biomedical science.

The division maintains close links with major research institutes and centres, including those focused on cancer research, tissue engineering, and biomechanics, as well as collaborations with international academic and industry partners. This collaborative and well-resourced environment provides students with opportunities to contribute to impactful research and develop skills relevant to careers in biomedical science, healthcare, and related fields.
