Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Fine Art

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Fine Art degree supports the development of creative practice through the exploration of materials, processes, and ideas. The course encourages students to consider how art can respond to and shape understanding within a rapidly changing world, influenced by ecological, political, socio-economic, and philosophical contexts.

Students engage with a wide range of traditional and contemporary artistic practices, including painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, installation, digital media, and performance. The programme promotes a hybrid approach, combining established techniques with emerging forms of creative expression.

Learning takes place within a professional context, helping students to develop both their artistic identity and employability. Access to discipline-specific studios and specialist workshops supports the development of practical skills and experimentation.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable experience within the creative industries. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The degree equips graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills needed to navigate and contribute to the evolving landscape of the creative industries.
