Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Computer Science
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Computer Science with Foundation Year is designed to develop the skills required to design and implement effective computer system solutions, supported by a strong grounding in mathematics and scientific principles. The course also emphasises the development of professional attitudes and practices needed for careers in the computing industry.
Students benefit from access to industry-standard facilities, including fully equipped laboratories with the latest software, as well as links with organisations such as Cisco Systems, the Microsoft Academy Centre, and Amazon Web Services (AWS), providing opportunities to gain relevant industry knowledge and certifications.
Delivered over four years, the programme includes a Foundation Year that provides a broad introduction to key concepts, with progression dependent on successfully passing all modules. The degree covers fundamental areas such as programming, data structures and algorithms, information systems, computer networks, and computer architecture, before progressing to more advanced topics including software engineering, operating systems, cyber security, discrete mathematics, and web development.
In the final stages, students explore specialised areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and wearable technologies, and complete an individual project that simulates real-world professional tasks. This project enables students to apply their technical knowledge, manage resources, and develop solutions to complex problems, preparing them for future employment or further study.
