Birmingham City University’s Higher National Diploma in Jewellery has a strong reputation within the industry, with graduates progressing into roles at all levels both locally and internationally. Based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, the course is uniquely positioned to deliver the skills and knowledge aligned with current industry needs. Students work on live, collaborative, and customer-focused projects, gaining practical experience through an industry-focused curriculum while developing traditional bench skills alongside an understanding of contemporary technologies.
The course immerses students in jewellery and silversmithing, enabling them to create pieces using both precious and non-precious metals through handcraft and mechanical processes, with a particular emphasis on metal manipulation. Its practical, design-led approach provides extensive hands-on workshop experience, helping students build expertise in materials, tools, drawing, and model making to support their design development.
Students benefit from access to advanced equipment, including laser welders, casting and plating workshops, and 2D and 3D CAD software. Experienced staff offer guidance, industry insight, and professional connections, while students are encouraged to take part in national and international competitions and live industry projects. Field trips and study visits further enhance learning by providing insight into commercial jewellery manufacturing environments.
The course is delivered at the internationally renowned School of Jewellery, located in the historic Vittoria Street building in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter. Behind its traditional façade, students have access to modern facilities including specialist workshops, a dedicated library, a technology hub, an atrium gallery, and exhibition spaces.
