Overview

The MSc Archaeological Science program offered by the institution combines scientific training with thematic and period-based study, providing students with the opportunity to tailor their studies to align with their ambitions as practicing archaeological scientists or researchers.

Students enrolled in the program will gain first-hand experience and a comprehensive practical understanding of the scientific principles and analytical techniques that are central to archaeological science.

The program aims to establish a solid foundation for students to maximize the impact of their research and advance their careers. Whether students prefer a general approach or wish to specialize in biomolecular archaeology, osteoarcheology, or zooarchaeology, they have the flexibility to create their own portfolio by selecting modules based on period, theme, and skill.

The program is led by experts who are actively involved in a range of innovative projects spanning early prehistory to the present day. These projects are organized under four major themes: human and animal lifeways, houses and the built environment, materiality, and the social significance of chronology.

In addition to the coursework, students also have the opportunity to engage with the latest national and international research developments through the distinguished archaeology research seminar series.

Students will have access to purpose-built laboratories equipped with bioarcheology and bioanalytical facilities, as well as comprehensive reference collections. The institution provides a wide range of specialist equipment, including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, reman spectroscopy instrumentation, and x-ray facilities. Moreover, students will have access to sample preparation equipment and a dedicated photography suite. The institution also offers specialized visualization technologies, such as digital microscopy, GIS, and digital illustration.
