Master of Laws - International Law
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The LLM International Law is designed for students from any academic background who are interested in global justice and wish to develop the skills required for careers in international law, human rights, or international development.
The programme provides an opportunity to explore and apply legal frameworks to global issues such as human rights, conflict, environmental challenges, and refugee law. It combines in-depth academic study with the development of practical skills relevant to international law and development contexts.
The course includes a dedicated module to support the transition to Master’s-level study, focusing on academic and professional skills as well as AI literacy. Students also have the opportunity to undertake a work placement, including potential roles within the University’s Law Clinic. Additional opportunities include applying for a field trip to international courts in The Hague, participating in live research projects with academic staff, and engaging in postgraduate community events. Eligible BCU graduates may also benefit from a tuition fee discount through the Graduate Scholarship scheme.
The curriculum covers key civil and political issues affecting individuals within the fields of human rights and conflict law. Students can tailor their degree through a range of optional modules, including the opportunity to take a multidisciplinary option from the MA International Relations and Security Studies.
Employability is embedded throughout the programme, with a strong focus on developing advanced academic and transferable skills. A preparatory module supports students in building these skills while adapting to postgraduate study. The course emphasises independent learning and work readiness, with students choosing between completing a dissertation or undertaking a placement in their final stage. An extended version of the programme, which includes both a dissertation and a longer professional placement, is also available for those able to commit to a longer duration.
