Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
Human Biosciences is a dynamic and rapidly evolving area of modern science, bringing together multiple disciplines and advanced technologies to explore human biology and health. It provides a strong foundation for a wide range of careers within the expanding life sciences sector.
The BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences degree is practice-led, supporting students in developing the practical and analytical skills valued by employers across healthcare, research, and industry.
The foundation year pathway is designed to support the transition into degree-level study in Life Sciences. Delivered at Level 3, it introduces key concepts and builds essential knowledge, skills, and understanding needed for progression. Throughout this year, students develop important academic, interpersonal, and professional skills, creating a solid platform for success in higher education.
Upon successful completion of the foundation year, students are guaranteed progression to the first year of the BSc (Hons) Human Biosciences degree. Opportunities to transfer to other Life Sciences programmes may also be available, subject to course availability and meeting relevant entry requirements.
The course covers a broad range of disciplines, including human anatomy and physiology, nutrition and metabolism, molecular genetics, infection and immunity, pharmacology and toxicology, and science communication. These areas are central to healthcare delivery, medical research, and the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries. The programme has been developed with input from industry and healthcare science to ensure students gain relevant, in-demand skills.
To enhance employability, students may have the opportunity to undertake a professional placement year in an industrial or research setting between the second and third years of study, subject to availability. In the final year, students complete an independent research project under the supervision of experienced academic staff.
