Master of Science - Health Psychology
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The MSc Health Psychology programme at Birmingham City University is accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS) as Stage 1 of professional training in Health Psychology, providing the essential first step towards becoming a Chartered Health Psychologist.
The course offers an in-depth exploration of key theoretical and applied issues within health psychology, with a focus on addressing contemporary health challenges. Students examine how psychological factors influence the management of health conditions, the development and evaluation of interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and motivational interviewing, and the ways in which interactions with healthcare professionals affect health outcomes.
The programme also emphasises the importance of understanding health inequalities, as well as the social and economic factors that influence health and wellbeing. A dedicated module supports the development of professional identity, personal growth, and practical skills, preparing students for careers or further training as practitioners and researchers within the global health sector.
Teaching is delivered by a team of active researchers and practitioners with expertise in areas such as addictive behaviours, eating behaviours, gender and health, mindfulness, compassion and self-compassion, healthcare interactions, and health inequalities.
Students also benefit from guest lectures delivered by professionals across health psychology and related disciplines, providing a broad, multidisciplinary perspective. The course includes the opportunity to design and undertake an independent research project in collaboration with academic staff. The supportive learning environment and approachable teaching team have been recognised positively by the British Psychological Society.
