The history department at Murray State University offers a passionate team of scholars who bring a wide range of world civilizations to life in the classroom. They love what they do, but why should one consider studying history? This question, “What is history?” has been answered poignantly many times, but the greatest minds of their respective generations always come back to one major theme: knowledge of the past is the key to understanding the present.

An historian’s work requires the mastery of a number of skills—chiefly patience, attention to detail, analytical thinking, and clear communication—that are highly beneficial across a range of career paths. History majors go on to become educators, researchers, lawyers, television and film writers, business people, and government officials. History opens a door and individuals decide what career lies on the other side.

The Department of History at Murray State University offers baccalaureate degrees, with or without certification to teach, along with both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science tracks. Both baccalaureate education tracks prepare students for graduate work at the M.A. or Ph.D. level.
