Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - English and Journalism

The BA (Hons) English and Journalism degree combines the study of literature and language with practical journalism training, preparing students for careers in the media industry. The programme develops critical and analytical skills alongside the ability to research, write, and produce engaging stories for a range of audiences.

Students gain experience working on live stories within professional media environments, supported by access to industry-standard facilities such as a live newsroom. The course enables students to develop specialist interests in areas including news reporting, broadcasting, feature writing, and media design.

Teaching is delivered by experienced academics and integrates literary studies with journalism practice and professional development. Students explore literature, language, drama, and creative writing while building the skills required to work as informed and reflective media professionals.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme equips graduates with a combination of subject knowledge, practical skills, and professional awareness, supporting careers in journalism and related fields.
