Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Philosophy and Ethics and Theology (VV6N)

Liverpool Hope University - Hope Park

What you will study

Philosophy and Ethics explores the big questions of life and morality. It challenges students to examine their assumptions, opinions and worldview.

Through close attention to the primary texts of philosophers such as Plato, Aquinas, Descartes, Hume, Kant and Nietzsche, Liverpool Hope University's Philosophy and Ethics degree will help students learn to analyze and evaluate arguments, and to compose and communicate their own ideas in a reasoned way. They will have a grounding in the foundational questions of philosophy. As students progress, they will look in depth at philosophy of religion, political philosophy, applied ethics and issues of human personhood, artificial intelligence and animality.

The degree is taught by a core team of critical academics who are passionate about teaching and are internationally recognized researchers and writers. This degree will equip students with the intellectual skills and perspectives needed to face the ethical and ideological challenges of the contemporary world.

Studying Liverpool Hope University's Theology Major provides students with the opportunity to study the core disciplines of the subject in-depth. They will engage with important issues in the contemporary world and major issues from the past that effect how people think and live today. This includes issues such as suffering and evil, sexuality and gender, justice and liberation.

Students' study will involve the development of critical reading and writing skills encompassing the areas of biblical studies, church history, and constructive, ethical, mystical, and philosophical theology. They will engage with issues concerning what it means to be human and to be divine, what is meant by spirituality and the mystical, including the ways in which the material realm can convey the spiritual.

Students can acquire expertise in finding their way through the complex and rich Christian tradition, and how it relates to vital historical and contemporary issues. A focus on global Christianity is one of the defining characteristics of the curriculum. They will have an opportunity to explore Christian theology not only as it pertains to the development of Western Christianity, but to the influences and trajectories in other parts of the world.
