Liverpool Hope University - Hope Park
The MA in Globalisation and Development Studies is designed for those interested in the influence of key political figures—such as Donald Trump or Elon Musk—on the global political landscape, or in examining issues like the decline of the Western-led world order and trade tensions with China. This programme is one of three new MA pathways developed by the Social Sciences MA team at Liverpool Hope University.
This timely and highly relevant course explores the root causes of global inequality, particularly the development of economies in the Global North at the expense of those in the Global South, including former colonies. Drawing on theories and voices from the Global South, the course critically analyses the actions of states, international alliances, and global institutions in the context of structural inequalities and an increasing demand for social change.
By examining globalisation as a system of exploitation, students will engage with key topics such as global dependency, free trade zones, human trafficking, modern slavery, sweatshops, and the feminisation of poverty in the Global South. The course also considers the environmental impact of fast fashion and its role in accelerating climate change.
Participation in the programme prepares students for careers in international NGOs, development-focused organisations such as the UN or EU, local authorities, and charities. It also supports progression into leadership roles and provides valuable links to a wide range of industries working at the intersection of development and global justice.
