Overview

The Governance and Devolution program offers individuals the opportunity to explore the structural changes to the constitutional arrangements of the United Kingdom. These changes include the establishment of legislative and executive bodies in Scotland and Wales, as well as the reinstatement of devolved government in Northern Ireland. The program also takes into account the context of the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, which presents an opportunity to reflect on the distribution of powers and responsibilities between the various governments and legislatures within the UK. By examining the opportunities and tensions arising from these structural innovations, participants are encouraged to critically assess the potential future for the constitution and nations of the UK.

The program engages in debates surrounding accountability, democratic engagement, and the definition of 'good governance', providing a comprehensive understanding of government and governance at both the national and international levels.

The LLM Governance and Devolution program is highly flexible, offering a diverse range of modules that draw upon the research expertise of the School. This allows participants to tailor the program to their own professional and/or employment needs. Sample modules include Constitutionalism and Governance and the Law of Devolution in Wales.
