Overview

Molecular Biosciences is a specialised research area within the broader Biosciences postgraduate research programmes (MPhil), focusing on the molecular mechanisms that underpin biological function. The division encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including biochemistry, structural and synthetic biology, cell biology, molecular genetics, and developmental biology. Research is conducted across diverse model systems such as Drosophila, yeast, Arabidopsis, tobacco, Dictyostelium, and mammalian cells, with an increasing emphasis on post-genomic and systems biology approaches to address complex biological questions.

The division provides a well-funded and cohesive research environment, supported by modern facilities and advanced technologies. It maintains strong interdisciplinary links with other scientific fields, including collaborations with Chemistry in structural biology and with Physics in the development of cutting-edge imaging techniques. In addition, the programme benefits from global partnerships with academic institutions and industry, enhancing both research scope and impact.

Research within Molecular Biosciences contributes to a wide range of applications, from advancing fundamental understanding of biological systems to improving the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases and developing innovative technologies with commercial potential. Students are supported within a collaborative and internationally connected research environment that encourages both scientific discovery and practical application.
