Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Product Design
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Product Design degree explores contemporary design across a range of industries, including consumer electronics, furniture, medical devices, and automotive sectors. The course combines creativity, technical knowledge, and practical skills to support the development of innovative and sustainable products that respond to user needs and real-world challenges.
With a strong emphasis on learning through making, the programme integrates user-centred design, social awareness, sustainability, and commercial understanding. Students develop the ability to respond to rapid technological change while considering the environmental and societal impact of their work.
All students begin by studying core modules that introduce the fundamentals of product and furniture design. From the second semester of the second year, there is an opportunity to specialise in Furniture Design, starting with focused project work and continuing into the final year. Students following this pathway engage with furniture-specific design briefs while building on the same core curriculum.
The course offers an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
The programme prepares graduates with the creative, technical, and professional skills required for careers in product and furniture design, as well as related areas within the design and manufacturing industries.
