Master of Science - Quantity Surveying (Professional Placement)
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The MSc Quantity Surveying is designed to develop the knowledge and skills required to add value to construction projects through effective cost and information management, improved practices and procedures, and robust risk management.
The course is suitable for both cognate graduates from disciplines such as architecture, engineering, construction, and real estate, as well as non-cognate graduates who are working in or interested in entering the construction sector. It also functions as a conversion programme, enabling graduates from any background to progress towards becoming chartered Quantity Surveyors, while supporting professionals in the built environment to advance into leadership roles in cost and project management.
Accredited by RICS, CIOB, and CABE, the programme covers key areas including cost and commercial management, whole life costing, law and contract, risk modelling, project management, sustainability, and business development. It also develops critical thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Building Information Management are embedded throughout the course to support integrated project delivery and cost management.
Graduates of the programme are highly sought after and have secured roles with major organisations such as KIER, Balfour Beatty, Vinci, Gleeds, Turner & Townsend, and Colas Rail, contributing to large-scale infrastructure projects including HS2 and Crossrail.
The course is accessible to a wide range of applicants, including those without prior experience in the built environment and professionals seeking mid-career development. Applicants with significant industry experience but without a first degree may also be considered, subject to an entrance assessment and interview.
