Master of Fine Arts (MFA) - Acting

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The MFA Acting programme is designed for graduates seeking advanced training to expand their knowledge and experience in acting, with the aim of pursuing a professional career in the field.

The course follows a conservatoire-style model, involving an intensive schedule of approximately 30 to 40 hours per week over a minimum of 30 weeks each year. It emphasises practice-based learning, enabling students to develop the intellectual, imaginative, and physical skills required of a professional actor. Throughout the programme, students work as part of an acting company, with exercises, workshops, and productions structured to progressively enhance their creative and performance abilities.

The programme aims to develop independent practitioners who can apply a range of methodologies to their work. It also encourages a forward-thinking approach, supporting students in identifying and creating employment opportunities within the industry.

Designed with international students in mind, the course is delivered full-time over two years. The curriculum has a strong European focus, particularly on texts from the British tradition. In the first year, students concentrate on ensemble work, the techniques of psychological realism, the interpretation of classical texts, professional preparation, and the development of foundations for independent research.
