Master of Arts - Creative Writing (Professional Placement)

The MA Creative Writing is designed to support the development of students as novelists, poets, scriptwriters, or non-fiction authors. The course is delivered by established writers and is enhanced by guest seminars and masterclasses from visiting authors, editors, and agents through the Institute of Creative and Critical Writing.

The programme enables students to develop their writing across a range of forms, including fiction, poetry, screenwriting, and creative non-fiction. It encourages continuous learning and the refinement of creative practice, helping students strengthen their imagination, expand their literary knowledge, and develop critical awareness as independent writers.

Students build and refine their skills within an environment that supports creative experimentation. The course is based on the principle that writers benefit from professional-style training similar to that of other creative disciplines, and it fosters connections with the wider creative industries.

Opportunities are provided to explore new forms of writing under specialist guidance, while engagement with external organisations strengthens links to the literary and cultural sector. These include partnerships and connections with Writing West Midlands, the Birmingham Literature Festival, the National Writers’ Conference, Verve Poetry Festival, The Emma Press, and Poetry Birmingham Literary Journal.
