Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Journalism

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Journalism degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the industry by equipping them with the knowledge and cutting-edge skills required to succeed as professional journalists. It develops agile, independent reporters capable of working across multiple platforms, while understanding the democratic role of journalism in representing diverse voices and stories. The course encourages adaptability, innovation, and entrepreneurial thinking, enabling students to engage effectively with an evolving media landscape.

Developed in collaboration with leading industry experts and researchers, the programme offers a range of complementary modules that build practical journalistic skills across all news platforms, alongside an understanding of the wider challenges facing the industry. Students are prepared for tasks such as live reporting, interviewing key figures, and covering complex contemporary issues, supported by research- and practice-informed teaching and opportunities for placements.

This four-year programme includes a foundation year for students who do not initially meet the entry requirements for a three-year degree, providing additional Level 3 study to support progression. After completing the foundation year, students have the flexibility to transfer to related undergraduate media degree programmes. Through workshops, live reporting sessions, and real-world storytelling, students gain valuable insight into the impact of journalism at local, national, and international levels, while developing creative, analytical, and technical skills.

The course is delivered by experienced professionals from broadcast, print, and digital journalism, and benefits from strong links with key industry organisations. Students have opportunities to work on live briefs, contribute to the award-winning Birmingham Eastside website, and collaborate within a shared newsroom environment. Graduates have progressed to roles with organisations such as Sky, the BBC, Reach Plc, ITV News, South West News Service, MKFM, Birmingham World, and the Express & Star, with some achieving industry recognition during their studies.
