Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Applied Theatre (Community and Education)
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Applied Theatre degree is designed to develop creative and socially engaged theatre-makers, with a focus on both the practice and purpose of performance. The course encourages students to explore not only how theatre is created, but also why it is made and how it can engage with communities and wider social contexts.
Learning is primarily practice-based, enabling students to apply their existing skills while developing new abilities in areas such as facilitation, devising, and collaborative theatre-making. The programme explores a wide range of applied theatre settings, including schools, community organisations, healthcare environments, prisons, and public spaces.
A key feature of the course is the opportunity to undertake a professional placement during the second year, typically lasting six to eight weeks. This placement allows students to gain practical experience with theatre companies, community groups, or educational organisations, both in the UK and internationally.
Through these experiences, students develop an understanding of the operational and administrative aspects of working within the creative sector, including project management, funding, and organisational practice. The placement also provides valuable networking opportunities and insight into professional environments.
The programme equips graduates with the creative, practical, and professional skills needed for careers in applied theatre and related areas within the creative and community sectors.
