Doctorate in Educational Psychology

The Doctorate in Educational Psychology is a fully funded professional training programme designed to prepare graduates for qualification as practising Educational Psychologists. It provides advanced academic and practical training, enabling students to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies required for professional practice. Upon successful completion, graduates are eligible to apply for registration as a practitioner psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and for Chartered Educational Psychologist status with the British Psychological Society (BPS).

The programme combines university-based learning with extensive practical experience through placements in local authority Educational Psychology Services. Students also attend teaching and training sessions at Cardiff University’s Centre for Human Development, where they engage with key theories, research, and applied approaches in educational psychology. Over the three years, trainees develop critical and reflective skills, gain a deep understanding of psychological development from childhood to adulthood, and learn to apply research creatively across diverse contexts involving children, families, educators, and organisations.

The course encourages the development of independent thinking and research capability, enabling students to work across different theoretical and methodological frameworks. It also promotes a change-focused, evidence-based approach to addressing challenges in educational and developmental settings. Applicants must meet professional suitability requirements, including fitness to practise standards, and successful entry is subject to satisfactory background checks such as an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. Completion of the programme does not automatically guarantee HCPC registration, as additional health and character requirements must be met.
