Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Sociology and Criminology

Birmingham City University (BCU)

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Sociology and Criminology degree offers a critical and practical approach to understanding society and its complexities at both local and global levels. The course enables students to explore contemporary social issues such as inequality, globalisation, and technological change, using theoretical and methodological tools to engage in evidence-based analysis.

The criminology component provides insight into how societies understand and respond to crime and criminality. Students examine how crime is connected to wider social issues, exploring patterns of inequality, power, and social hierarchies. This approach encourages a deeper understanding of how definitions of crime are constructed, as well as how emerging social issues may be shaped by changing legal and social perspectives.

Students develop key research and analytical skills, enabling them to investigate complex questions and interpret real-world data. Teaching is informed by current research, supporting engagement with contemporary debates and developments within sociology and criminology.

An optional professional placement year is available between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain practical experience in a relevant professional setting. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.

The programme prepares graduates with the critical thinking, research, and communication skills needed for a range of careers or further study within sociology, criminology, and related fields.
