Bachelor of Science - English - Creative Writing

The creative writing program at Murray State University offers a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degree in creative writing, as well as a creative writing minor. Under the guidance of the award-winning faculty, students in the program hone their craft in small workshops that provide individualized attention and a vibrant peer community.

Students majoring in creative writing have the opportunity to take introductory, intermediate, and advanced courses in fiction (including short fiction and novel writing), nonfiction, and poetry. They can also enroll in specialty courses covering topics such as horror writing and nature poetry. In addition to learning from faculty members, creative writing majors benefit from visits by published authors as part of the annual Murray State Reading Series. They also gain experience in editing by working on Notations, the student-run literary journal.

Upon completion of the program, creative writing majors are prepared for a variety of careers, including screenwriting, editing, publishing, technical writing, video game design, marketing, journalism, teaching, business, law, and professional writing. Some graduates choose to pursue further education by attending graduate school. Graduates of the program have been accepted into MFA programs at institutions such as Florida State University, Hollins University, University of Mississippi, Spalding University, University of Tennessee, and University of Washington-St. Louis. Ultimately, creative writers develop valuable skills that are sought after by employers.
