What you will study
The BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering degree is designed to prepare students for careers in the evolving field of audio technology and production. The course develops the technical and creative skills required to work across areas such as live sound, acoustics, audio hardware and software development, and studio production.
Delivered in collaboration with Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, the programme combines technical expertise with practical, hands-on experience. Students engage with a broad curriculum covering key aspects of sound engineering, including acoustics, live and broadcast audio, studio recording, immersive audio technologies, and software development.
In addition to core topics, the course explores advanced and emerging areas such as embedded audio systems, machine learning in audio, and multi-channel sound design. This ensures students are well positioned to engage with the latest innovations shaping the audio industry.
The programme offers an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study, providing an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience. Students are responsible for securing their placement, supported by the university’s careers services and employer networks. Those who successfully obtain a placement can transfer to the placement version of the course.
Overall, the degree equips graduates with a combination of technical knowledge, creative capability, and industry awareness, preparing them for a range of careers within the sound and audio engineering sectors.
