Overview

Cancer and Genetics is a specialised research area within postgraduate research programmes, focusing on improving understanding and treatment of cancer and inherited diseases. The research is centred on translational approaches, bridging fundamental science with clinical application to benefit patients. This includes work ranging from basic molecular and genetic studies to pre-clinical research and early- and late-phase clinical trials.

The programme explores the genetic and molecular basis of disease, with particular emphasis on cancer biology, diagnostics, prognostics, and the development of new therapies. Research areas include haematological malignancies such as leukaemia, solid tumours, and genetic and genomic medicine, as well as cancer immunology, metastasis, and cancer cell biology. The aim is to improve patient outcomes through innovative treatments and a deeper understanding of disease mechanisms.

Students benefit from access to specialist expertise and facilities supporting both laboratory and clinical research. The programme provides a strong foundation for careers in academia, healthcare, and the biomedical industry, enabling researchers to contribute to advances in cancer treatment and genetic medicine.
