Master of Science - Strength and Conditioning
Birmingham City University (BCU)
What you will study
The MSc Strength and Conditioning programme is designed to develop the specialist skills and competencies required for a career as a strength and conditioning coach or in related roles, both within and beyond sporting contexts. Based at the Alexander Stadium, the course places students in a high-performance sporting environment, offering authentic learning experiences that reflect the day-to-day responsibilities of professional practice.
Practical sessions make extensive use of the stadium’s world-class facilities, enabling students to gain hands-on experience in a variety of settings. These include delivering conditioning sessions on 4G and grass pitches, conducting sprint analysis on a 400m athletics track, analysing performance in laboratories, and coaching exercise techniques in a fully equipped strength and conditioning gym.
To further develop practical expertise, students complete a Professional Practice placement, providing the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills with industry partners in real-world contexts.
The programme reflects the evolving demands of the strength and conditioning profession, supporting students to explore specialised areas such as training female and youth athletes, working with disabled athletes, and understanding the impact of cultural and religious practices, such as Ramadan, on training. It also highlights the application of strength and conditioning in broader contexts, including rehabilitation, healthcare, and roles within emergency services.
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to critically engage with current research and reflect on their professional practice. The research component equips them with the skills to apply evidence-based approaches, as well as to design and conduct research projects in collaboration with staff and peers, contributing to both industry knowledge and personal professional development.
